Shivaji Maharaj realized the need of Jaldurga to stop the enemy’s attack by sea and to rule the sea and during his visit to Malvan he liked Kurte Island and he planned to build a fort there.

The construction of the fort started in 1664 AD. All the initial religious rituals were performed at the nearby Moryacha Danda. There the Sun, Moon, Shri. Ganesh, Mr. Sculptures of Lingam and Nandi are made.

Shivaji Maharaj is hailed as the father of Indian armour.

The fort is spread over a distance of about 3 kilometers and is built on 48 acres of land. The fort has a total of 52 bastions. One of the many peculiarities of the fort is that the main door is not known. Also, the entrance to the main door is curved so that the door cannot be broken by running or hitting it with an elephant or any other device.

Surrounded by the sea, this fort has 4 fresh water wells. The names of the three wells are Dudh Bav, Dahi Bav and Sakhar Bav. Shivaji Mahar’s temple is also another feature. Another feature of Shivaji Maharaj is the footprints of one hand and one foot. Some families still live inside the fort and take care of the fort.

Seeing Sindhudurg fort is such a pleasant experience that we are transported back to the 16th century. It is essential to visit the fort and experience it with your own eyes!
